Hi! I'm new to the forums and new to coral. Had a few salt water tanks over my life but have mainly been large freshwater. Looking to try corals so I hope to learn a lot here.

Any suggestions on where to get started with low cost and low risk corals? I have a 55 gallon tank already up and balanced for salt water. Regardless, I'm assuming I'll have some casualties as I start so don't want to lay out too much money in the beginning.

    Thanks,
    Bill

Ricordea Mushrooms, Im new to coral as well!... They arent to expensive either... ranging normally around 5-15$ a mushroom, They dont have high specialized feeding needs and are pretty easy! I just got a few the other day for my tank and they do add quite a splash of color to it.

Supposable mushrooms are fast growers though in the right conditions.

    welcome to 3 reef Bill

Casualties when you start are not definite
if you take your time, dont rush to stock your tank
monitor and address water quality issues, then its a reasonable target IMHO to set yourself at 0 loses in terms of corals

    good beginners corals
Green Star Polyps ( if you do lose these, many on here will want advice on how you achieved it as they grow like weeds and can take over a tank)
    Anthellia - as above
Button polyps - Zoanthids and palys - including the really nice coloured ones
    Mushroom colonies, ricordia etc
Soft leather corals, finger and plate
    Toadstool corals
    Yellow polyps
    Clove polyps

any of the above list and probably more would be great for a 1st foray into corals
moderate lighting, flow requirements vary so tank placement is something you have to "feel" your way around
