I am new to keeping a reef tank. right now my tank is cycling but for future reference, is it okay to keep a variety of sps, soft, and lps corals or should you just stick to one type of coral?

sometimes you can have coral warfare, through stingers or toxins. with the more aggressive types , just give enough between them and you will be good. you can keep all the types youre asking about. placement will be the main concern . good plan youve got

If you are new to reef I would stick with the softies until you feel confident in the hobby. Great starters are mushrooms, starburst, zoas, yellow polyps, brains, even some plants. Try to avoid buying something pretty at the store and finding out when you get home that its toxins can kills your entire tank. Usually you can put a hold on items at your lfs and go home for some research on light requirement, placement in tank and aggressive nature. Eventually, add new types but realize that after softies things become a lot more difficult with lighting, water quality, etc..

+1 on the solid advice given by Divott and Kelley11

different corals have different needs in terms of lighting, water quality, parameters, flow etc that and the previously mentioned potential for chemical warfare as species fight to either protect or to aquire real estate

if you start with the basic corals, easy begginners species as suggested, then your chances of early success are good and as you build up experience, feel that you can control the conditions required , then you can move on to the more demanding species

good luck with the venture, Mariman - its a very interesting journey IMO

Definately a wise choice to start with softies and slowly move up to LPS and eventually SPS (if you choose) once you feel confident in your reefkeeping abilities. Even some hardy LPS corals would probably be no problem if your levels and lighting are dialed in. Just do lots of research and look at lots of tank pictures to see what you ultimately want in your tank;)
