Newbie here needing help

I have found this forum to be second to none in terms of helpful and knowledgeable people! I found this one early on when I wanted to convert my FO to a reef and people were just genuinely helpful and nonjudgmental which I found to be so refreshing and have always gotten sound advice! I've also read a ton of the articles on the site and again, learned a ton!

 

For a fish only and to start the N.O. lighting you have will be fine. But as far as getting corals and such they wont do. I wouldn't waste any money on different bulbs right now as they are not needed. For corals you'll have to upgrade to CF at minimum, but I would save up for at least T5's.

 

So in short, I will be fine with just regular lights if I am doing FOWLR. One more question, will the lighting effect coralline algae?

I would get the 50/50 bulbs for now. They cast a nice color for a fowler tank. Thats what I first started with before my T5 setup. The stock lights are so crappy looking and the 18" 50/50 bulbs by zoo med are really inexpensive. They will look a lot better.

 

I think I will wait a couple months. I found some inexpensive LEDs the other day on a website. The only thing about them is, there are no reds or greens in the lighting, only white and blue.

That should be fine for lower light corals. I have their "double bright" fixture over my 46BF and while it could not support higher light corals, my Kenya Tree and Xenia do just fine under it.
