Minimum tank size for clowns is 20 gallons per Liveaquaria.com. Twenty gallons is do able for smaller types of clowns, I would not put Maroon clowns in a 20 gallon.

In a 20 gallon tank with clowns you seriously limit addition of further fish.

A 40 gallon tank is more appropriate in my opinion.

Depends on your budget. This hobby is very addicting and you WILL end up getting more than just a couple of clowns some time. Look on craigslist for cheap used systems in your area and start there. 40 breader is a sweet foot print and fun tank to look at. Just depends on where you want to go.

Which type of clownfish are you thinking of getting? I started a 10 gallon tank last March (way too small so I am upgrading to a 30 gallon tank with a 10 gallon sump). I started with one clownfish after the tank was cycled and added a second one the following week....which didn't end very well. It seems clownfish are very dominant when it comes to each other. In any event, I would see if you can get a mated pair and add them to the tank (hopefully one much bigger than 10 gallons) at the same time. I wish I had more deeply read through the forums before attempting to add a second clownfish, especially in such a small tank.

Right now, 7 months later, my initial clownfish is still alive and living peacefully with a royal gramma.

What I would do if I was you, hit the books. Head up to your local fish store (lfs) and buy a basic aquarium book. It will teach you everything from starting the cycle to adding your first fish. Also just go and ask some questions, get adapted to the setting. You’ll find out very soon how addicting this hobby is, also being a new hobbyist you should get the largest tank you can afford, the bigger the tank the easier it is to maintain. also it'll let you keep more then 1 fish in you'r tank.

Welcome to the hobby this site is a great source of info for getting started.;D
