hey guys. i have a 40gal. breeder tank. i started it in may. i have a alge blenny, small horseshoe crab,2 yellow back damsels and 2 yellow tail damsels in the tank and live sand mix with my crushed coral reef beding. i just added my first 10lbs of live rock to the tank bought from my local fish store. it was been in there for like 4 days and one of my rocks has this white crusty flakeable(looks like it is) stuff on it. it also has a little bit of like a lime green of the same stuff. i was just woudering if yous have any ideas or any info on this. thank you

I have a rock that is covered in white coralline algae also from what I was told that lr that are white with coralline algae where taken from deeper depths. (I don't know if this is true or not) but I've had it close to a year and it is still covered in white.

You can try taking it out and dusting it off with a powerhead in a saltwater container and see what happens. Never knew there was white coralline. Cool.

I've seen this on very few rocks before, but i do agree it is some type of algae and there is no need to worry.

i would imagine pretty good, you should have some different types of sponges, maybe some pods or baby brittle stars, that is if they kept their tanks clean and healthy.

that will be cool. when i got my rock they did have some in there tanks for show but he took me to there backroom where they keep more. its was just in a huge tub thing with just water in it and filled with rock and they had all the lights off. speaking of light how or does that affect the rock at all?

rocks do need light in a sense to keep all the living organisms and algae alive, i am not actually sure if LR needs light itself, a good question that i have no definitive answer for.
