First, let me state I am a newbie to the salt water hobby, so please don't be too rough. I'm here to learn and improve.

I have my setup for a short while now, but everything seems to be prospering except part of the very first coral I bought at a LFS.

I was told it was a Green Star Polyp and a Kenya Tree. So if that's wrong I apologize, but that's what I was told. I will post a picture. The Green Star looks like it's doing fine. The Kenya tree seems to be retracting more and more. It is in a high flow area.

My question is, if I wanted to separate the two (bought as 1 piece on rock), how can I do that to try to relocate the tree to a lower flow spot?

At this point, any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

You can cut the tree coral at the base and re-attach with a rubberband to a piece of live rock, frag plug etc. The GSP will outcompete the tree coral and cover it completly until it dies. Both of these corals grow/reproduce rapidly, you would be wise to keep the GSP seperate from other corals on an "island" or something similar. The tree corals will drop babies like mad just be prepared to do a bit of pruning or if you are lucky you can trade them for other corals.

the ID is correct. Kenya tree do that time to time, as long at your prem are correct or closes to correct kenya tree will grow lol. IMO i would let the GSP have the rock and cut the Kenye tree as closes as you can to the rock and relocate it to where you want it.

Thanks for all the replies so quickly!

Since I haven't done any kind of Coral cutting, I'll try and research the best way to do it. I don't want to hack away with an Xacto knife and end up ruining both.

The GSP is separate from all the other rock in the tank except for the one it came on and one other (can be seen in the pics).

Hopefully I'll have some success :)

    Thanks!

Agree...also totally agree with the concept of keeping the GSP on its own little island. It grows like a weed. It is really cool looking, but if you doing keep it separated from the rest of your reef, it will take over. I have a seperate island of GSP in my tank, it it looks really cool. In my first tank, I let it grown on my main reef, and I really regretted it. Welcome to 3Reef by the way. You will find folks easy to talk to here - we are all in it together ;-)

    Welcome to 3reef!

I agree with what everyone else is saying. Separate them and let the GSP grow on its own rock ;)

The Xacto knofe or razor blade is the perfect thing to seperate the tree from the GSP, it will be fine, trust me! I have yanked mine off my rocks and then cut off what I coundn't get out with my hand only to have it grow back from next to nothing in a week or 2! It is very, very tough!

Here's a recent shot of my 29 gallon frag tank to give you an idea what you have to look forward to.

And here is my GSP in my 55 gallon (it's probably 2x that size now!)
