When I am finished with my RODI unit and have the necessary water prepared for a change, should I empty out all 3 RODI canisters before I store the device or leave it as is?

Also, If I prepare 10 gallons can I put it aside for 3-4 weeks sealed no problem? Im cycling but have free time so Im enjoying using my new RODI! However I don't want to waste my filters if Im going to have to dispose of the water anyways.

    Thanks Everyone!@

I'm glad you asked. With most filters, when they are not being used, they should always be empty of water. RO/DI filters are the one exception.....you should always LEAVE THE WATER in those.

You will be fine just cutting the water supply to the filter and leaving it as is. No need to remove the filters after each use, I would suggest keeping the filter out of direct light. I've also left large batches of water in a dark light-proof container for weeks on end without problems, also. I did keep a small Maxi jet 400 running inside it to keep the water moving.

The water that remains in the RODI unit after the flow is cut off is fine to leave in there. Just remember to "flush" your unit before its next use to rid the unit of the water that has been sitting in there, meaning let the unit run for 5 minutes before collecting water.. Most people don't drain their unit between uses.

Are you talking about keeping fresh RO or salt water RO? Storing water for almost a month may not be the best idea if you are looking to maintain near "perfect" spare RO water. Even if kept in sealed bucked you may see the TDS rise a few points (which isn't terrible). If you are talking about storing water that has been mixed with salt I would not store that for more then week and even that is pushing it IMO. I've had to store salt water in a bucket for a week and when it came time to use it seemed like there was a lot of build up incrusted inside the bucket and this occurred even with good circulation.

I would just be storing fresh rodi water, no salt. I would wait to add the salt until 24-48 before I need to use it.

That is clay. It is inert and won't harm anything. I wouldn't have an issue using saltwater that was 6 months old if it was in a covered (food grade) container and continuously circulated.

Thanks everyone. Once I'm cycled (time seems to have stopped lol) I'll probably become much more efficient and just prepare a week ahead of time and store in dark closet with a small flow pump and a small heater.

I really like this RODI device, prob my favorite purchase so far. I was curious and tested the water in my Brita... 80 tds!!! I drink that? Oh well my body can handle it.

    Thanks again!

Remember though that a lot of those things are good for you. In a reef tank, Iron, Phosphorus, etc cause algae problems. In your body, those are good for you. However, who knows what else there could be.....that's why I use a Brita too.
