I bought a flame angel about 3 months ago. It was awesome, never had a problem with it- had about 7 different types of coral including softies and LPS. Also had a yellow tang, some clowns, a damsel, and a blenny- no problem whatsoever. Until one day.. Brought a cat's eye coral back from the fish store (was the nicest one I had ever seen). Two nights later I hand fed the cat's eye coral (like I do with alot of my LPS). Well- the next day I noticed my cat's eye coral expelling the waste from the previous night's feeding. Who was there to take the waste of it's hands? The flame angel, happily eating the leftover krill. In the days following, I noticed my cat's eye was slowly expanding less and less, until one day I decided I was going to watch it for a couple hours and figure out what was going on. Sure enough I spotted the flame angel picking away at the fleshy part of the cat's eye, deflating it like a blown tire. Sadly, I allowed this to continue for a couple more days before I decided to get rid of the flame angel, which required me pulling apart 90 lbs of live rock to try and catch him.

After that event a few weeks ago, I decided angelfish are best not suited for a reef tank. I know alot of people have good luck with them, and that coral beauties are [apparently] less likely to nip, but why take the chance with a 90 dollar coral and have to worry about nipping fish. Im happy to say- my cat's eye is now fully expanded in all it's glory, almost as if he's saying thanks for getting rid of that ******* fish.

Exactly, some ppl have good exp's with Angels and some dont. I'm one of those ppl who had a bad exp. Its a 50/50 chance you take. Me personaly, my tank will never see an Angel again, at least not the ones that need SW. Luna

Angels are out. The large ones. Not reef safe. The dwarf angels, you have a chance with. I have had a coral beauty and two flame angels (both died). They never dined on any of my corals. Once in a while the CB will appear to nip on some corals but I am never sure if it is just nipping to nip or it enjoys the lifeform. It is constantly nipping at the rock. With Dwarf Angels, it is a crapshoot. They can be cool now, then years down the road, start eating corals. You just have to keep an eye on them.

Now. If you get one. Get only one. They will fight otherwise. A lot.

Yeah i have one orange and white i did have 2 a black and white but he died of a mysterious death, i reckon from my damsel bullying it to death, he has been given away since, i have the coral beauty now a friend of mine donated him to me due to being overstocked, happy to say he is doing great at the moment with the other fish, he nips at the rocks too all day, hopefully this will not lead to the corals, there are polyps and tasty xenia in there, fingers crossed....
