    very small grain sand doesn't get green or brow diatom algae on it, but it has sand storms very easily and cannot be cleaned with a gravel vac. larger sand will get algae on it but it can be cleaned with a gravel vac. now unless you have a rather large number of sand shifters you will have to replace your sand eventually if you don't vacuum it. i wouldn't get more then 1" of sand.
