Hey guys I think I'm ready to bite the bullet on buying an MR1 media reactor. The one thing holding me up is what size I should get. Do you guys think the standard one is way overkill and I should just get the shorty. My tank is 20 gallons and even with my refugium, chiller, protein skimmer etc. the tank is roughly only 30 gallons. It just seems like many of the nano tanks I see on here still run the standard size MR1 instead of the shorty...One thing I did notice which is stupid is that the the price difference between to two is almost nothing....The way I see it is if I can't find a shorty for significantly cheaper I might as well get the standard to add more water volume to my tank...

If it is to be used for media that needs to be tumbled such as biopellets or gfo I would choose the one with the smaller diameter.I think this would make it easier to get the proper tumble with the smaller amount of media that is required by your system.

    Hi
They both have the same diameter the shorty and mr1 difference is only the height.

Anyone have any experience w these reactors?

I used one of these for biopellets and replaced it. While it's a greatpiece of equipment, it's not good for biopellets as far as I'm concerned. I currently use a hydra which is a top down injection style reactor which works well and if I were shopping again, particularly for a small tank, I'd get one of the new style with the built in pumps on the bottom that shoot up into the media.

I have the XL model on my 180 for GFO and I don't feel the height makes that much difference and by the way I love the reactor. I use a Sicce .5 as a pump
