Right on, and 1 1/4" pvc handles that much flow? Surprised a pipe that size could take what should end up being around 1000gph

I know I'm not the one you were asking, but 600 gph seems way too low for a 180g. I'm probably going to be doing more than that, and my tank is 100g, and its a FW tank, which doesn't need as high turnover.

That's an open debate. Some prefer high turnover some low. I prefer low turnover personally. IMO it is wasteful to rip a ton of water thru the sump when your only going to filter some of it. I prefer low turn over. After my water goes thru the overflow it first is gravity fed though the skimmer then passes thru my chemical media. With no additional pumps. My turnover thru the sump is only 5x even though the turnover in the tank is over 50X.

Covey, have a question for ya, you said the coralife is a re-branded Panworld/Blueline, but from what I can see, the coralife has a plastic housing, while the panworld pump is metal?

    Problem

I tired using 1 1/2 cvc pipe but um nothing. Is it too big? I need help, when i sphon through the check valve it starts and then i cover the valve, as its a air tubing and it continues for about 30 sec, then loses its siphon, maybe its too big?

You might have a leaky check valve. 1 1/2 or any size for that matter should work.

Can you post a pic so we can troubleshoot?

    problem solved

I didnt know that you had to cover the "vent hole" to get a siphon. I also had to cover the outlet hose going to the sump. after i did this i sucked the air out through the vent and bam working! only problem is, I built the 1 1/4 before i figure what was wrong so i havent tried it on the 1 1/2 but bot are equally the same in workmanship so i think it should work. i dont think my pump will work with the 1 1/2 though, as i noticed the water was rising slightly on the return side of the sump, is there a way to lower the gph.

Is that a check valve in the top of the siphon loop?

Whats is up with the cap on the intake. Do you have holes drilled in it I am not seeing?

Anyway it sound like your figureing it out.

"is there a way to lower the gph." You really don't need to dial back the overflow unless I am not getting what the problem is.
