provided you put the check valve on , use a air line hose and suck the air out or use a vacum pump.

Ok resurection time again. I spent most of 3 hours trying to get this to work without drilling a hole to put in a valve to draw out the air, I gave out and drilled it in the end....

My next question is this, if I put some square section guttering along the top of my tank and cut fingers into it so it looks like a weir, then connect this to my outlet pipe to the syphon would this be better than a standard syphon outlet ?, I am not tech minded so thought I would ask.

    plumbing drilled tank

HEY GUYS AND GALS! I'M NOT SURE IF THIS IS THE RIGHT FORUM.BUT IN ANY EVENT I'M CONFUSED WITH HOW MY TANK IS ACTING UP.
I have a 40gal acrylic with a drilled hole in upper right hand side.I brought this tank from a friend which came from a going out of business lfs. The thing is, at first i had it plugged but now i want to use it. I used 1.25 diy pvc bulkhead which fits perfect to plumb 1.25 pvc to sump. When i connected everything together and plugged in pump, tank filled up to the point of almost overflowing. Then suddenly a loud slurping sucking water to sump. but then the filling up and slurping process was a continuious thing. I then took it apart and re-plugged drain hole.
IS THERE ANY HELP TO THIS MADNESS? NEED HELP ASAP!!!:confused:

Just take a long piece of air tubing and place it at bottom of vent having tube hanging over top of vent tube.

UK is now metric - so you might have to look request 25mm or 26mm pipe

any plumbers merchant or big DIY chains should have this

Sounds like you got a very good deal. Wish I had the hole in the side thing.

I presume the hole is up at about the height the water level in the tank should be.

Sounds like you needed to put a pvc Tee with the bottom going to your sump and the top going up above the tank. Try that at first with the top open and see if it flows smoothly even if you can hear the water rushing. It should. Then put a cap with a 1/8 hole in it on the top. Should quiet down and run smoothly.

What I think was happening is your were trapping air in your pvc pipes which caused the erratic noise and flow.
