To get photos without flash you will want to use the modes on the other side of the dial. Most of the ones on the auto side will give the camera the ability to use auto flash. I like using shutter priority mode. Set the shutter speed at about the same as the focal length of your lens and click away.

I have a D60. Hard to take good pics with actinics. You have to go into manual programming mode and adjust ISO, white balance, etc. Hard for me to describe over the 'net. It's a complicated camera. I highly recommend a tripod as well.

There should be an image of a lightning bolt crossed out on the dial. That is automatic with no flash. If you switch it to M you run it on manual and have to adjust all the settings and manually turn on the Flash. If you manually choose the settings watch the meter in the eye piece - ---|--- + you'll want to manipulate either the shutter speed or the F stop to get this in line with the center. The meter reads in one of the squares in the eye piece usually the one that lights up red for auto focus. You'll generally want to find the darkest area of the image you want exposed and meter on this and make your adjustments. Then focus in how you want and take the shot. I also would highly recommend a tripod for this. Also if you don't have a shutter release cord or a remote, set up the timer on the camera to say 5 seconds or so and push the shutter button and step back and let the camera count down so there is no way your shaking the camera. Gl and hope this helps some.
