I'll confess I'm about as lazy a reef keeper as you can get, but my Nitrates aren't anywhere near your values. Looking at the pic I don't see any fish. Is this the case? If there are what are you feeding them. One big thing I believe is helping me is I use pellets. My LFS feeds them to all his fish because he believes they don't polute the tank like flakes and frozen foods. Just something to consider in the event the tests are correct. Which would be easy to confirm at your local LFS.

if the nitrate was truly at 50 ppm then the coral sould be closed and the fish would be dead. its not finding how to drop the nitrates but rather what screwed up the test to make it say that.

nah, fish can withstand up to 80-90ppm before they get stressed....and u'd be surprised how tough corals are...is not rare for my tank to run at 40ppm for a little while...and my reef thrives...both sps and lps...matter of fact, my coral grows faster when the water is a little dirty

but prolonged periods of time it will take a major toll(casualties) i say you just wait and see how things turn out.

If you bought the API Test kit from the same fish store we talked about yesterday, then I'd disagree with the test kit results. I bought one from him as well, and was 20ppm+ off from the second I opened the package. I tested freshly made saltwater and was reading somewhere inbetween 20-40ppm. Might be from the same order he placed. Take a small sample of water to Mainstream and see if he'll test it for you. I'd guess he'd at least have better kits. I started to use Salifert recently...but they can be expensive.

i dont think its possible, there would be somewhat of a change in coral health and look, i way just wait it out overnight or something and see how things go.
