From my experience they tend to trap to much crap in them and not allow stuff to break down like it should.

I use Salifert kits day to day in and out they are as good as any Lamont is good as are the Sea chem kits I'm just used to the saliferts and to lazy to read new directions .. Well first off stop feeding the tank or cut way way way back and stop all froze meats and let the system settle in a DSB should lower NO3 a bit for a yr or so , Then there are the water changes ? And unless you are using a good water you may well be adding them and PO4 into the sysem..You can make a coil of some type rather cheaply just get large roll of black poly tubing and hang it on the tank or lay it on the floor just let it siphon from tank to sump that will remove a lot of NO3. But it has to be black tubing..
