since my display has been doing so well i decided to take some of the sand, water and rock from it and start over in my nano12gl DX. did a 50% water change added a 8pds of rock and about 2 pds of sand. Water levels were perfect in the 90gal, however just tested my nano and i have a Nitrate spike out the roof. What could have caused this? Do i do another water change. Have not checked alkalinity or Calcium but here are the other level. Only thing in the tank is a hermit crab.

    ph 82
    am 0
    nitrite 0
    salinity 30
    gravity 1.022.

Probably just a mini cycle...is it new rock? or from your 90?

    What is the nitrate reading?

The rock, water and sand was from my 90gal. Nirtrate reading was between 40 and 80. My hermit crab seems to be doing well though.

What does the water on your display check out at? Like BL said it might be a mini cycle. If your still having problems I would try a different test kit.
