Does anybody know if the nitrifying bacteria from a saltwater tank will work in a freshwater tank? I'm thinking of taking the squeezings from my saltwater filter sponge & putting it in a new freshwater tank in an attempt to help establish the bacterial colony. Any idea if this will work?

    Thanks!

Whops sent that off to fast.. Think of it like this - if you took a salt water fish and dropped it in a fresh water tank it would live for a few min but would eventually die. That is because the fish would be outside its normal environment. It took thousands of years for these fish to evolve. While bacteria is a MUCH simpler organism the same applies.
