    Take it slow, TinFury. Remenber, each creature you add will be adding his waste (ammonia) to the tank. Your small colonies of bacteria will change the ammonia to nitrite and then to nitrate. So, if you overwhelm the bacteria, you'll get spikes of ammonia and then of nitrite and nitrate.
    The bacteria need time to increase in quantity to meet the demand for their services.
