Nitrogen Cycle Best Practices

I have been looking for a few good write ups on the Nitrogen Cycle... ones that describe what it is are plentiful.

I've been looking for write up on how to do it properly...

use dead shrimp
skimmer on or off
lights on or off

I want to establish a "best practices" of here is how you'd do it if you were doing it right.
