    The fact that you have nitrates indicates that ammonia has cycled to nitrite and then to nitrate. You definitely have good bacteria in your tank. Also, the fact that you have diatoms (brown powdery stuff) also indicates good water quality. But add your livestock slowly, because each new bioload you add will increase the need for more bacteria, which take time to develop.
