Did you go in and actually look or just call? 99% of lowes or home depot employees have no idea whats going on at all (no offense to anyone just being honest). It's a pretty standard item, they all should have it.
Or as said, you can order it online and schedule a store pick up, there would be no shipping charge.

Picked up some black eggcrate at Bulk Reef Supply for a decent price. It is more expensive than the white.

Home Depot and Lowes stock it but it wont be where you think it is in alot of the locations. Most would assume its with the lighting but alot of times it isnt. The employees generally have no clue so dont bother asking unless you just want a laugh when you see the expression on their faces. Check either store in the section where the ceiling tiles are and you will find it there. Our local lowes sells it in white and black and its right next to the plain old ceiling tiles and costs about 10 bucks for a 2x4 foot sheet.

It should be with the drop ceilings, and may be some with lights, but its not like that at the ones around me. Know any drywallers? That's all part of their trade and they would know where to get it, or may have an extra piece kicking around.

Most of the "kids" that work at these stores have no idea what they have in the store, much less why anyone would need or want it.

Try the "Insulation Isle". Its usually on the bottom four feet of the shelving.

The egg crate is used in commercial syle 2x4 lay-in light fixtures that are suspended in a cieling grid type of cieling. This type of cieling is used to as an inulation barrier or envelope. I
