    not so much on the rock, i have a few strands of hair algae on the rock, assuming whats in the sand is a type of hair algae then that would maybe be related. i am at such a loss. once i see your pics i will be able to tell if we have the same thing.

    the best way to put it is like black tubes standing straight up. they seem very deeply rooted in the sand as well.

    I have no idea what it is, but now I'm curious..8)
    why no camera?...I found out that a camera is a required part of reefkeeping, especially if your on 3Reef! lol : )

    Here you go..these are best pictures I can get from my fuji S3200. they are like small roots with size not more than 1/8". i have them on both rocks and sand, they started on rocks and slowly moved to sand.

    hoping someone can step in and confirm ID :-/

    is the tube hard? do they throw out a web type of string?

    if so they might be Vermetid Snails

    They are not vermited snails. They are not hydroids either, before someone suggests. I too have the same thing that you have. I don't know what they are. You can only see them after the fish fluff up the sand. They have been there for over a year so I don't think that they are harmful. My other tank doesn't have any. I used live sand in one and dead in the other, so I assumed it was something natural and good for the bed.

    I don't think so. they don't look like vermetid snails. but yes, tube looks hard haven't touched them though.

    do you have them on rocks too? i have mine in both rocks/sand.
