ReefSparky, by "built-in" I just meant installing a GFCI (or equivalent device) into the actual tank stand instead of using my wall outlet (added bonus - it'd clean up the cluster fu** of power cords). Thanks for the link Otty.

Yeah I'm with most on this one. Its not overkill by anymeans. They make these, and they are NOT optional IMO.
I had almost the exact same thing with a heater as you, except it nuked my prized FW tank once. Was full of all native lake fish

Did you save the heater...definately call the maker of the heater and see if they have any warrenty! As crappy as this is....which I am very sorry for your loss....one plus is that you did not have your arms in the tank when it happened!

Definately get a GCFI....I had a fire in a tank because the water ran down a cord. Luckily no damage happened as I kept smelling something burning for several hours. I had just stuck my head in the stand and pulled it out when a big burst came out of the surge protector. I was able to disconnect it right away. I went out that day and bought a couple of those for my tank. Unfortunatly I did not learn...about 2 weeks ago I was sliding my 12g nano tank over and water splashed out onto a surge protector and smoke started pouring out of the strip and a small flame came up. You would have thought I would have had a GFCI on every tank, which I did...with the exception of this one tank! Now every tank I have has one of those in it.

I agree with Schackmel. luckily you didn't share the same fate as your tank! Im redoing my entire electrical, GFCI and ground probe as we speak. something that cheap may one day save your life. Best of luck with the new setup.
