Yes, I was researching this and came to a conclusion that I would need 5 car batteries hooked up to the unit to be able to run the pumps for about 5-6 hours. A gas operated mini generator would definitely be my choice. I'd put it in the balcony (for any gasses buildup to not be trapped in the house) and run an extension cord to a power surge. I'm going to wait for the next power outage to buy the generator, if the battery operated air pumps work well, I don't see a problem.... except if this happens during the winter when I can't heat up the water. The generator would be more reliable to run any heater.

Trust me..... lesson learned! The hard way as it is usual with me :-D

As a veteran of many hurricanes down here I feel your pain bro. We once lost our power for three weeks. I had no battery air pump so I ended up using a bicycle pump with a pin for filling a basketball.I taped a piece of airling tubing to it and kept my fish alive with many sleepless nights.I got a generator for the remaining two weeks. Can't help with the water temp. as cool water is not a problem down here. Also be careful using a flashlight to check your fish. I once blinded a fish doing this.

Be careful. generators get scarce when the power goes out. especially in the winter.
