I siphon out water into gallon jugs and poor it back into the tank from a height of approx 1' to keep the water aerated, I do this every hour but you can probably go longer.

I am just going to assume that since it's summer keeping the tank warm is not an issue.

Just keep it aerated. Like Cheryl said. Power web out her in San Diego a few months ago and the power was out for 14+ hrs and I had no casualties. I think if you keep it aerated you'll be fine. I think I went a couple hours in between pouring cups in the tank and no issues.
    Good luck!

I have experienced power outs of 8 - 10 hours duration during warm summer months here

a battery powered air pump is invaluable in my opinion I have 3 of these sat in my cabinet in case of any future power outs

my issue was keeping the tank cool, left to its own devices for that long without a chiller working my set up would heat up to over 30 C ( I never left it long enough to find out just how high it would get)

for that issue, ice packs floated on water surface, helped a lot in my opinion

my set up suffered like this one day per week during 2008/ 2009 ( do not remember exactly) due to rework being done on the local power grid
this occured for maybe 8 - 10 weeks running, and due to the battery air pumps ( one of which I used to power a Berlin air lift skimmer which also sits under the cabinet for future emergencies) and the ice packs, I did not lose any stock of fish or corals

Buy some sort of battery backup so you can run 1 or 2 powerheads. I bought the Vortech batter backup for 2 of my mp10ws so if power goes out they run at something like 30 or 50% speed for 72 hours (prob 36 since I have 2 units plugged into it). Already worked once during a power outage while I was away from home!

My main fear is my HOB filter being off for too long and turning into an ammonia bomb waiting to happen if I am away when the power is out for many hours. Not sure how to handle that one

This post couldn't have come at a better time for me as well, I bet Chance is getting the storm that just passed in Chicago yesterday.

Just cause surface agitation, use a wooden spoon to mix the water.
