I took all my bio balls out just now and now there is a ton of noise in the sump. It goes into the top on a drip tray and then all the little holes spill out water onto the bottom and its making a ton of noise.

The Bio Balls broke the fall of the water and reduced the noise tremendously....

What can I do now to block/help the noise...Can I add a piece of plastic in there somehow so it hits that first?

What do you suggest? What have you done on your own tanks that works?

I am almost thinking 4 balls or something then a tray on top of that which is smaller that the box size so water falls off the edges into the sump...or even a regular dish or something....anything....help!!!

    Thanks....

Why did you take the bio balls out?

I read and was told here and there that they actually contribute to high nitrates. My are sky high right now so I removed them and I started weekly 20% water changes.

i dont believe your bioballs are the reason for your 'sky high' nitrates....bio balls contribute to raising nitrates as they act as particle traps (ie uneaten food, waste) which produce nitrates when it decomposes....anyhow.....what are the actuall reasons for high nitrates?
what is your bioload like? how old is the tank? how much lr do you have? what/how much/how often do you feed?
    lol.....thats my .02 today :D:)

try some filter pad. I am another believer in not using bio balls. I really dont see a need for them.

Great idea on the LR...I will do that once I grab some more.

For now I put a large glass in the there and its catching the water and then spilling over more gently and not making much noise.

    I definilty need more LR!
