Hey 3reefers I'm trying to eliminate the noise on my overflows. My setup is a 125 with 2 corner overflows with a Mag Supreme 24 running at 5ft of head. I have tried a bunch of different standpipe configs and all have been noisy. I am going to try the durso here shortly but before I make it I need to make sure my current bulkheads aren't my main issue. I currently have 3/4" bulkheads for my return line AND my drain lines. Now every setup I ever see it seems that they have a slightly larger diameter drain line than the return. I am curious to find out if by changing my standpipe to the durso design my overflows will quiet down without have to enlarge my drain bulkheads. I would prefer not to change my bulkheads as I have spent much time & $ on multiple check-valves and ball-valves to perfect the current setup. All is currently perfectly failproof and running exceptionally well except for the dang noise in my overflows.

    Any input is appreciated.

I must ask you to more specific as "what type" of noise you are hearing. The flushing sound? Gurgling?

I made a pair of Hofer gurgle busters with mine. they are completely awesome and I cannot hear anything in the overflows now! i basically made them as my full stand pipes.

Durso will quiet things down well. But as asked above where is the noise coming from?

Pickupman66 what is a hofer gurgle buster?

a standpipe will quiet the waterfall sound. Using a durso vent will also increase your drain capabilities. I do highly recommend that if you do a stand pipe such as a durso style or stockman style, the main drain pipe should be the next size up and use a reducer bushing to connect the stand pipe to your bulkhead.

For example, If my drain bulkhead in my overflow is 1", I want to use a 1.25" pvc for my stand pipe and use a reducer bushing, 1.25" to 1" to connect the 1.25" stand pipe to my 1" drain bulkhead. It'll eliminate the flushing noise.

I used a ball valve on my drain pvc at the sump. Adjust the valve to be the same flow rate as the pump. Also I cut up a prefilter and put it at the edge of the overflow so the water flowing through the overflow "holes" is quiet. That worked well for me and cost about 4 bucks for the ball valve/prefilter.

I have a float in my drain pipe, keeps things quite enough for me.

Exactly what I did. It's so quiet I have a hard time hearing whether or not it's still flowing (such as if the return pump were unplugged for some odd/dumb reason).

Ive always heard of folks doing that with the ball valves, but that scares me. not sure why as the hofer's and stockman's meter teh water in a way.
