It was sold as pulsating xenia. At one point it did pulsate. Now it doesn't, is short (barely much length of stalk), but it is spreading. I have found another spot in another part of the tank where it seems to be growing. Is this normal?

    .05 NO3
    8.4 pH
    344 ca
    10 Kh
    minimal phosphates
    4xT5 on 55g tank
    sump with protein skimmer
it has been low in direct flow, high in direct flow, and currently grows in both.

everything else is doing very well!

    Thanks

Yep normal. If its open and growing then its fine. No one knows why it really pulsates to begin with. sometimes you get it home only to have it never pulsate again, other times it wont pulse at the store then goes crazy at home. Just one of those things

it is very normal for pulsating xenia to stop pulsing at some points in time, but if it is spreading, it will be alright, give it some time. it is very normal for the xenia to spread all over the tank as certain branches will detach itself from the mother branch and spread to other parts of the tank. Unless it starts to melt, I would not bother to worry, xenia is very hardy

Xenia will pulse better if there is no current flowing across it. Some people can't get it to pulse in their tanks while others do. It's somewhat mysterious that way. Some people also say that it stops pulsing whien your iodine level is low. Since your's is growing and spreading I'd just give it some time. Make sure you are doing water changes.

Appreciate it everyone. I do a water change every week b/c of the large tang (only fish in the tank) and the feedings that come with it. But this is the first time I have had pulsating xenia and it not pulsate. This is also the longest I have had it as well....

I agree with pgreef about the current..if i turn all the flow off in my tank for maintenance or something..my xenia will start to pulse like crazy! but as soon as i turn everything back on they stop. Maybe pulsing is their own way of moving the water to filter stuff out and if there is current they dont need to..who knows

My xenia did the exact opposite. It did not pulse much at all until I moved it to a higher water flow area. Now it pulses like crazy. Spreading like crazy too. I use to spot feed it DT's but now that it is growing like crazy I have stoped. Good light will play a big role in it pulsing as well. When I first put it in my tank it took a few days before it statring pulsing. I'm sure this will be different for each person as there are many variables that can effect it. This is just my experience.

My tank has lots of flow, and I've had a frag of pulsing Xenia for about a week now. Pulses like crazy. It's a weird coral.
