Alright guys...i'm not completely new to the hobby and I'm somewhat new to the forum & I can easily say i am gaining more and more knowledge the more I research on here. I'm hoping that someone else hasnt done a thread like this but chances are that they have but I wanted to start my own cause I have my own ideas and a bunch of questions and was needing some help. Basically my goal is that I want a fuge/sump but i have very little knowledge and I'm ready to put more time and effort into

    1. I'm a little unclear on the whole point of a fuge/sump? For more filtration?
    2. What is the difference between a fuge & sump? & Is there a combination of the two that can be done.

I want a DIY 55 gallon fuge/sump for my 90 gallon cause it is just sitting in a closet taking up space. I kinda know some of the basic materials that would be needed but not completely sure on the whole concept and run down of it all. If any one has any plans (step by step would be nice) or a good link for building a 55 gall. fuge/sump that would be great! Any senior members or anyone for that matter (since my knowledge is very limited on this subject) would be greatly appreciated. I am just looking to gain as much knowledge so I don't go into this blind & I just want to do this right. Thanks!:p

Fuge (refugium) is a refuge for various food source animals to grow safe from predation by the fish in the display tank. Some people also add algae to their fuge to lower phosphates and nitrates in the display tank.

My suggestion is to read as much info on different ways to set up a fuge and sump. There are many different ways and you want a system that best suites your needs. With so many variations of diy and store bought sumps and fuges you want to make sure you do it right the first time. Get a plan of action together that you think will work for you then post it here for approval and/or questions you have on your design being that there are so many variations! Good luck and happy planning! Cheers
