    I have a 48" tank. Must I use a 48" light fixture or can I get a way with smaller? Would like to get MH if I can afford it. Thanks

    yes you can get any size you want. but if you want to keep corals it gets more complicated, assuming you get the right type and amount of lighting, if it doesnt span the whole tank you can only keep corals under the lighting part. exception could be metal halide, halides are designed to cover a square two foot area
