How many days should I leave a piece of nori in the tank before swapping it out for a new one? I don't want it to start my nitrates spiking?

    Thanks,

    Jim

yours stays in uneaten for more than 2 minutes? Guess my tangs are just big ole piggies. I would say only a day or so. but you may want to put in smaller pieces so what they do eat is gone in an hour or so. I feed 1/4 sheet to my two tangs and they have it gone in usually less than 2 or 3 minutes. all that is left is what is inside the clip itself. they get this once or twice a day depending on my attitude.

what fish do you have in your tank and how big? what other foods do you feed them and how often? My tangs are both over 8" and they get fed the sheet and flakes daily with some frozen mixture every few days.

Brand new tang, little guy, I just got him on Sunday. He is just getting used to his new 75 gallon home. He has spent most, 95% of his time hiding behind the rocks, but has started coming out to take quick bites out of his nori.

Thank you for the advice, I swapped out for a new piece that I coated in fresh garlic. I hope that he devours it and makes him/herself at home. I feed my tank with Rod's Food which is an excellent blend made here in IL. I saw him chasing after that behind the rocks today, so I am very optimistic.

Looking forward to waking up to empty clips. Thanks again.

I believe most Nori/Seaweed products say if uneaten after 8 hours you should take it out.

Mine go through about a sheet a day. but I have 5 medium sized tangs within the 3-7" range. Its good for them to have some left overs throughout the day while you are gone because of their grazing habits. Mine however would like to have flake food all day long but thats a no go lol.

I don't even clip a sheet into the tank. I hold a piece about 2" x 2" in for 30 secs to let it hydrate, then I rub it between my fingers to rip it apart into tiny pieces. The tang and others eat it out of the water column. I just leave the big bits that escape while I'm doing this go, since the tang and clowns usually just find it at a later point.

My tang was eating the nori this way in the store for about 3 months (they got 4 purples in in a single shipment, and sold the first 3 before I got mine), so he was very used to it. YMMV.

if you can't get them to eat from the clip, you might try attaching the seaweed to a rock by rubberband or some other method. some fish are a little afraid of the clip i hear. not my pigs but some fish.

mine usually ends up this way after they tear it off the clip and fight over it as they tear it to shreds. i'm not sure why i still bother to put it on a clip.

tell me about it. I cannot get mine in the clip before they are trying to rip it out of my hands. and even then, 50% of the time they rip it out and take off with it.

give the lil guy some time. if you have good algae on your rocks, he will be fine if you just put it in once daily. Tangs are a good part of your cleanup crew. they keep your rocks and glass free fo any hair algae. what kind did you get?

here are my pigs. they think im about to put some food in.

You should put it in some time after your lights come on and take it out when they go off. any longer and its rotting.

Thanks guys for all the good advice, sorry it took me so long to acknowledge you for your help. Now that the yellow tang is used to his new home, he makes short work of the nori and it is gone by morning. It is going so well, I added a powder brown tang yesterday. Wish me luck, the yellow isn't too happy about having a newcomer in his rockwork.
