I have read somewhere that it is bad to put a valve on the return pump, is this true?

I have a valve on my HOB overflow to control that flow around my pump, which works very nice.

Its better to have a valve on the return than the drain. If something like a snail or a fish wants a ride to the sump and goes down the drain only to get blocked by a half open ball or gate valve it could lead to a flooded DT and a dried up return pump if not caught soon enough.

ya i actually have 2 on my return line. one is inline with the pump to control speed of the pump and the other is on a t fitting thats hooked up to a hose. when i want to do a water change i just shut the one valve thats inline and open the one on the hose. pumps the water out for me!

You can also get more flow out of the overflow by lowering the standpipe.
