... what occurs to me is the question: What is China going to do with 72,000 tons of coal? Run a small coal fired power plant for a day?

Don't they have their own coal?

Seems like a huge waste of energy to ship coal in small amounts....

I can't see the coal doing a huge amount of damage to the reef beyond the localized area it hits... which isn't to downplay the seriousness of that area's damage... but in 10-15 years it will probably be pretty well healed and in recovery.

I'd be more worried about the 1000 tons of oil on board, plus fuel, and the debris from the ship falling apart.

...this is why we need Koalas with laser beam eyes glued to sharks. It's the only way nature can protect itself.

i had read similar articles in the past that people were concerned with the idea of this happening due to the way they're transporting cargo to China through or close to the GBR.

this is really really bad. if the GBR were to be wiped out from a human caused oil spill ..... i wont even get into it....

i'm just amazed that these huge ships are even allowed to pass so close the GBR. just seems like there would be more of a restriction for large vessels and possible damage to the reef.

Wouldn't the oil stay at the top?

Corals and plankton don't do so hot without light, not to mention that if one little drop touches a given polyp it's gonna hurt it badly.

The ship, btw, went outside a shipping lane, so it basically did veer outside of the normal area where ships pass.
