I guess raw oysters from the gulf are out of the question for the next decade.

Its the companies fault. If they wanted to they could seal the line by either pinching and closing the well or remotely welding a trap to it. Either way renders the well useless and the company would rather allow the spilling of crude than spend another 25 million + to drill another well on the same reserve. BP has been one of the worst companies in history in terms of accident management. Even Exxon is still paying for what they did in Alaska. If BP wanted to close that well they would have by now. And dont think Im an extremist or anything, this is what I do and anyone in the industry knows it can be done. Its just an awful british company who does not care about the gulf of mexico because it does not directly affect them. I hope they get their business torn to the ground for this.

I haven't been able to find any info about how or why the BOP failed in the first place, or whether or not the tree is still intact to enable a remote shutdown.
    Anyone heard?

well... so far no new news on this.... i see they're trying to use a friggin dome tool to suck out the water/oil as it spews from the hole in the main line. CLOSE THE FRIGGIN HOLE ALREADY BP!

Looks like the spill is gonna make it's way to the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Crude oil on a already stressed reef....This is not good.

im gonna guess that this is going to be a 30-40 year toll or more on the gulf. between this incident and the oil ship on the barrier reef.... *sigh* our oceans are getting destroyed pretty fast...

its going to be rough.. I remember as a kid when you would get tar on your feet in the sand on the Texas beaches.. Looks like this is going to come back.. I hate BP, they need to close that hole and sacrifice their friggin well rather than kill the environment.
