    Interesting discussion/discovery...

I doubt this would work; you'd deplete the resin in a matter of minutes, plus you'd probably strip some "interesting" desirable things from the water column.

m2434 might have some ideas to remove Silicates, considering he doses them. LOL

Just asked him in the "fuzz stuff" thread. I figured the DI running in the filtration would be about useless. I used to run Chemipure Elite a year or two ago, and I remember it having DI resin in it, so I thought what the hell.

Sorry, I just wanted to comment on how awesome your mandarin looks. Looks like he's a spokesperson for the algae. Like the geico gecko. LOL

There are a couple of different types of plastics used in egg crate. One was notoriously bad for leaching. I seem to remember an old thread about this from a couple years ago. How long has the eggcrate been set up.

It is an ORA Psychadelic (Spotted) Mandarin. He ate pellets from day one. My wife named him I-gor.

The egg crate has been set up since late July, 2010. I'm going to get a silica test kit and see what comes up. If I am high in silica, there is really nothing I can do about it short of removing the egg crate and replacing it with sheets of PVC that I can drill to accommodate plugs. I don't really want to do that. Like I said earlier, it is not harming anything, just ugly. I will continue to clean it weekly, and wait for it to go away.
