I can't tell you the strain best utilized if you don't know what coral your thinking about :) Nanno is not what you want to culture, I can tell you that right off the bat. You'll want to do a diatom.

From DT's? Most likely Nanno will. Using a mix is a bad idea as is growing Nanno to feed to your corals. I suggest getting a disc from FaF (Florida Aqua Farms) or a starter culture from SHS (Sea Horse Source). Don't use Miracle grow as it does not contain all the needed elements and will make for a poor nutritional profile of the algae. You want to use a modified F/2 Guillards mix (a fertilizer mix designed just for phytoplankton).

Gresham, it sounds like Romulox is not sure what strain of phyto is needed. Is there a somewhat comprehensive list of which corals can use which strain of phyto? I"ve never found any good documentation on this topic and would love to see/read something about it if it's out there. Even generalizations would be handy, I'm sure. Everything I've read says that most coral don't feed on phyto directly. Are you aware of a publically available source that has good information about this?

I guess you fooled me with posting DT's in another thread????

Very tough "cell membrane" and small. Like I said, a diatom would be best. There is a reason why Phyto-Feast is nearly all brown/golden brown algaes. Nanno is fine for zooplankton, although it's nutritional profile is not that great.

Even with Phyto-Feast nanno (least amount within the mix) would still win. It's survival of the strongest and that's 99.99% of the time nanno.

Dendronepthea are one of the few softies shown to utilize phyto and believe it or not, for sps pocillopora has been shown to utilize phyto as well.

It's best to start with a mono culture from a place that sells phyto starters/cultures.

Sorry about saying it was DT's earlier i thought thats what it was but i checked the label and it was phyto feast, but either way i started the culture and ill try it out and see how it works for my tank and if not i can always try again with a diiffrent strain of phyto, which one would you recomend be the best choice for a culture?
