Hey everyone. Ive been reading up on nps corals and understand everything so far except for one thing. Does the water have to be kept at lower temperatures? Thanks!

if you mean non-phytosynthetic corals heres my answer
i believe some do since they come from cold waters. but i think some of the corals need regular temperatures. i have never done those corals so i don't know from expierence. i would look up the each coral you want to make sure. but good luck.

yeah non photosynthetic. its really murky online. some pp said they needed huge chillers to maintain 55 degrees. alot come form deepsea and are not readily available so idk if thats the ones they were talking about. or if the more readily available sun coral/gregorians(?)/ chili coral needed colderwater as well. idk. was trying to get some stuff and bypass the lighting reqs but kinda defeats the purpose if i need to buy a chiller. anywho azooxanthella or non photosynthetic corals are interesting and a lil off the beaten path so if anyones interested check it out!

I believe there are several that do not need cool temps, but the feeding is a real problem. There was a real good thread somewhere ( I think RC) about regular (like several hours a day) drip feed of phyto and very successful NPS long term growth and happiness. Otherwise they tend to be a pita to keep fed properly.

those corals are only reccommended for advanced aquarist. besides being really hard to find information on them. you would need to implement some kind of system to dose plankton through out the day, to have success with most of the corals. i would stick to the more well documented corals. even if they do have costly lighting. otherwise you bound to end up losing alot of stuff you aren't prepared for. if you want some cheap lighting to test out some of the easier corals, and see if you want to continue in corals go here
    HO T5 & HO T6 Aquarium Lighting
make sure you get t5 lighting because you might have a hard time finding t6 bulbs.
they also have a decent selection of pc lights
