With that style of overflow you really need two gaskets per bulkhead since you have multiple surfaces that need sealing versus one glass or acrylic wall. One goes on the flange inside the internal part of the overflow box and the other goes between the internal box and the inside tank wall to seal the two surfaces from the outside where the nut is. Without the gasket between the two internal wetted pieces you run the risk of water travelling through the threads between them and out around the external nut.

In one of your photos it also looks like the bulkhead is a sloppy side to side fit in the drilled hole like the bit was too big for the bulkhead. The bulkheads external threads should be pretty snug in the hole with little to no side to side movement.

^^- with that style overflow- he's right- 2 potential surfaces need sealing-
and I great style/design of overflow I would add.

I'd just like to make a few points I see-

Why is it set up like a penisula style DT- yet one of the picks shows it against the wall?

And- you're using those sharp 90degree fittings- while they obviously work- they really cut down on the total flow potential some.

And I agree that the bulkheads you're attaching the drains to are vertical. But, those boxes are actually held in place by the bulkheads in the glass wall, right?

Again- I'm not really criticizing at all- nice work, and keep up the good work.
Just still not sure about the peninsula thingy. But it's all good and all works.

I actually have 3 sets on each. One on the inside of the in-tank box, one between in-tank box and glass, and one outside of the tank between glass and outside box. The bulkhead is pretty snug actually, it's a zoomed in picture. That bulkhead in particular is 3/4, for reference.

Yep, it's a peninsula setup for sure. 2 reasons for it. Tank used to be FW, small room divider, so the stand has openings on that side, thus I re-used the same openings vs. leaving open ares for my kids to throw things through. Second reason is that I like having access to the plumbing to be able to work on it when I have to, and it lets me put the tank right next to the wall, otherwise tank would be a good 1" off the wall which would leave more room for kids to throw things at. :) The boxes are held by 1.5" bulkheads, yes. I am actually not too worried about the 90degree loss of flow, there are 3x 1" drains, and only 1 3/4 return, there's more then enough flow on the intake, I am actually slowing it down with the ball valve as it's too fast for the return pump.

I am actually pretty happy having the plumbing on the side, as once again bulkheads leaked. I will be replacing them in a little while as soon as I find some new ones in the local store.

Have a different question for the guys who have experience with AI lights. I picked up a hammer coral yesterday that had some very nice shades of yellow, but with my current light setup it looks washed out. Does anyone know what are the best settings to use in the lights to make the corals pop? I am using two Hydra 26s.

And before I forget, thanks a bunch everyone for all the feedback!!! In a few minutes I am going to post a pic for critique of the scape.

Remove the gasket on the outside/nut side. This is preventing you from tightening the bulkhead properly and does nothing for you.

Nope, there's no gasket between the nut and the outside box.

did you buy that overflow off Ebay? I was looking at one on there for my future build. I like how low profile the inside box is. if you could list or PM me where u got it I would appreciate it. Looks good!

Yep, I sure did. I would opt out for Reef Savy, but they don't make them currently. There are two vendors who sell on eBay, I got mine from Modular Marine, looked much better quality. The standard they sell is 2000gph, which was too big for my tank, so Brian from Modular Marine has this one custom made for me to my exact spec for the same price.

Thanks oldfishkeeper. They sure do, we just found my wife's diamond watch in a shoe. :)

This hole does not look "snug" to me.It looks like its at least a 1/4 inch too big.
