I guess it depends on the other tanks mates. They release the poison when threatened or stressed. So if the other fish mess with it then yes it can poison the tank and kill the other fish. I would take it back myself, but that's just me.

Did he also say it was reef safe? Because they will obliterate inverts and munch corals like crazy.

Ive had 2 mr. longhorns in the past 10 years.. one of my favorite fishes.. they have good tank manners.. he would always comes up to the tank when I got close by or to feed. but only had this fish with a couple inverts and other fishes. they are slow to turn and can get picked on when small. just make sure the fish doesnt die, thats when the poision extraction can really happen. if you dont get it out quick within a couple hours...if you dont you'll need to do alot of water changes. but the decision is up to you on it being reef safe or not.

    good luck..

    Mr. Longhorn 1 & 2 - R.I.P. :(

I had one of these guys a couple years ago. They're very friendly, wierd and alien looking too. It was a showstopper at the store. I didn't keep it with corals, just with a hippo tang and two percs. He eventually died though after about a yr don't know why.
As others have said, It may not be reef safe and it may only excrete toxins if it is harassed. A 6gal may be a temporary fix for a very short period until you get something bigger. Minimum tank size is about 100gal or more.
