How small is he? My fiance really wants to set up a tank for a yellow boxfish at some point, and it seems the really tiny boxfish are pretty finicky eaters and can be tough to keep fed. I don't know if it is the same with the cowfish, but they are close enough it might be worth looking into. They also get really big(16"+) and grow fast, so even if it all worked out it would be pretty temporary.

Just to be safe, run a phosban reactor and good skimmer for the ostracitoxin. You could always put it in a larger bin temporarily if that would make it happier. That is a two way street though: the larger water volume will mean that if it does give off any ostracitoxin, it will be diluted quicker; but it will take more time for the filtration to filter all the water. It depends on if he is happy now. If a larger container makes him(her) less stressed, she(he) will be less likely to nuke. But unless you can get a minimum of a 48"x32"x24" (160gal), anything you do will only be temporary until you can get it to the LFS.

    The moral of the story:

    Don't buy on impulse!
