You can always dial down the pump if it has that option or just put a ball valve in the return line. I say get the bigger cheaper one. Its cheaper now and gives you room to get a bigger system later or add more flow if you ever need to such as to get rid of some pest algea.

I tried dialling down an oceanrunner 2500 just using a ballvalve and after about a year it snapped the ceramic spindle that holds the impeller in place and eventually burnt the pump out. I then used a relief valve which stopped it burning out and didn't put the pump motor under pressure. Now I just use a smaller pump it also saves on electricity. You don't want a torrent going through your sump, your best to have a slower flow through there and use powerheads in the DT or a closed loop...

I think the 3500 fits the tank better as well. It will use less electricity and add less heat than a 6500 as well.
The only way I would go with a 6500 personally is if you were planning on running a bunch of other stuff off it like carbon/phosphate/calcium reactors etc, or if you have to run through a lot of plumbing or something to get to your tank from your sump in which case the head loss might kill your flow from the 3500.

I would aim for about 600gph (after head loss) getting to the tank personally, that will run your tank's volume through the sump about 5 times an hour.

thats cool well gonna go with the 3500 i think that push's about six times the tank so not bad with head loss
