Is there any advantage to getting saltwater from the ocean? Just wondering since that is where my water is from.

there is more disadvantages than advantages do to all the unwanted stuff, now don't get me wrong; when I had my fowlr tank, i used ocean water with good results, but after some reading and advise from a fellow reefer ocean water need to be collected away from shore,
by means 1mi or so of shore, waters near shore are known to have higher salinity, nitrates, and other pollutants like marsh depending of the location. I have always mix my salt from that day on, can't go wrong and only has what your tap water or ro/di adds to it

it depends on if you get ocean water from the LFS or if you get it yourself from a beach or bay. LFS ocean water down here is great they get it from way out and way deep and put it thru a small filtration process, it already has all the trace elements you need for your tank. it's all i use.

now if your getting it yourself from beach/bay then it's prolly polluted. too much junk in the water close to shore.

Best part though is it's free! :D And pretty convenient for water changes :p You can always do some of your own filtering with carbon and such. That is probably all your LFS is doing to filter it.

yeah its' free but i definitely don't reccommend getting water from the beach. down here at least. LFS get it from at least 5mi. out and a few hundred feet deep.

they just closed a big portion of North Miami Beach for too much pollutants/fecal matter in the water. closed yesterday still closed today.
