I have an ocellaris in a small 10g nano cube, and im curious if this is a problem or not but most of the day he is at the top of the tank skimming the top of the surface of the water with his top fin, at night he sleeps sideways basically right at filter, is this an issue or is this just maybe his "host" area?
the only problem with my water is nitrates, but that is coming down now

Is it breathing normal? What I mean is, is the mouth opening and closing really fast? If not, it's pretty normal for them to hang out on top. Mine does the same thing and at night they hug the back wall to sleep;D

It is just being a clown from what it sounds like. Mine sleep vertical in the corner of one tank or along the top like you mentioned yours does. I have one that likes to wedge itself in between the back and the heater and just sit there. I have also seen one of my keep bumping into the side of the tank lol. The one that like to wedge itself by the heater will also swim backwards into the back of the tank lol. They do crazy things sometimes.

Sounds normal to me. As long as he is eating fine and not breathing heavy, he's probably just being a clown.

My clown swims in different parts of the tank during different times of the day and once it's lights out, he goes to the surface in one of the corners until the lights come back on.
