is it alone in the tank or does it have a tank mate, could just be maturing. Is it still eating and acting normal?

I’ll second that, maturing or he’s stressed. They can get lighter or darker when stressed. A false percula is a rather hardy fish, so probably no worries.

ya agreed with crimson, if hes acting normal prolly just going thru the change of maturity. Just keep an eye on him and get him a tank mate! They act like a whole new fish when they have there spouse with them. Idk what mine would do if one or the other passed.

from what I read if you want them to breed your prolly gonna need a dedicated tank and if not a kick ass cave so they wont be disturbed. Mine right now are finally starting to chill in my rock works after 3 months of being in the back behind the glass. At my 8 month mark im goign to add a btanear the cave they like for some protection for them, but then again my stupid clowns think there mad max beyond thrunderdome and bully my damn sailfin, ya go figure right!

Yes you dont want your other fish eating them, but its more about there feeding that is the hard part. They need a very specific diet until they get older. Pretty much need there own tank.
