I just came down from dinner and fed my fish, I noticed that one of my clowns was missing and after looking I found him on the floor behind the tank. His little body still seemed moist so I started to trickle some aquarium water over his gills. After about 5 minutes he started to breath on his own but that’s it. He produced a huge amount of slime over his whole body and he just sits on the bottom of the sump. What more can I do ?

Sorry...but I don't think there is much you can do. If he is still breathig, but lying at the bottom of the sump I would just leave him for a little while. I sucked a small cichlid into the water change hose once and had to cut the hose in half to pull it out..When I put him back into the water he just sunk to the bottom with blood coming out of it's gills..10 minutes later I checked and he was swimming around.

ouch i can imagine the panic attack feelings that went through your mind...

Honestly i dont know if there is a lot to be done. The best thing you can do is ensure that nothing adds to his stress. Keep any sump lights off, keep pristine water quality and add vitamin supplements to food

wish you the best of luck and i hope the little guy makes it!

He has both pectoral fins going now, but not much else. I put him in one of the sump compartments that is high in pods and relativelym quiet.

it might be too late but you can do "fishy CPR" Depending on the amount of time it was out of water, you can place the fish directly in front of a powerhead for several minutes. I have had a couple fish saved this way

He just started to swim a tiny bit. Man, my tank is covered but there is a small space at the back he must of slipped through. How long should it take for his slime coat to reform? In case I need to treat him with melafix or something.

One time when I was working at Petsmart, I came in in the morning and saw a fish on the ground. I went to pick him up to throw him out (he appeared dead) and then saw him twitch. I put him back in the tank, and within 30 minutes he was swimming around fine like nothing happened. I don't recall the species, but point is, some fish are pretty darned death resistant!
