Ok i have a new Octopus 150 NWB 09 skimmer that i plan on using for my 40g reef / 20g sump. what im wondering is, when i turn the skimmer on it seams to be working great, the only thing that is bothering me is it is producing a LOT of VERY SMALL micro bubbles in the skimmer area in my sump. they are coming out of the outlet tube of the skimmer. know their is also a few small bubbles as well that are fine. its just the micro bubbles are very small and their is so many of them that they cloud up the skimmer area and my bubble traps between the skimmer area and the return pump area cant filter them out. the bubble traps does how ever filter out the few regular size bubbles just fine.

my question is, will the skimmer always produce this very, very, very small micro bubbles or is it producing them because its a new skimmer? Could it also be from the fact that my tank is a new tank? another words i just added the water and sand just yesterday and nothing has had time to cycle or anything. i know "dont use the skimmer for awhile on a freshly started tank". ive just been marking my water levels in my DT, Sump and to make sure everything is working correctly.

    Thanks a lot.

this is a photo of the sump and with the skimmer on producing all the little micro bubbles. its kinda hard to see them, but you can see how the left side of the sump, where the skimmer is looks kinda cloudy.

I have an Octopus and the instructions say it takes 2-3 weeks to break in...that's all I know! I just turned mine on yesterday. lol

I'm sure someone else on here will know!

it is just breaking in like said above. But I would say that I would have added one more baffle on the right side of that bubble trap, sort of like this |l| if that makes sense? So the water travels over, then under then over again. Seems to also really help get the extra bubble out.

Breaking in simply refers to the skimmer getting itself adjusted and used to your tank conditions. The viscosity of salt is affected by many things, oils being a big part. The oils and other various chemicals that are in the skimmer from packaging are going to restrict adequate foam production(if that makes sense). After a few days to a few weeks, the oils break free from the skimmer and a "slime" coating is formed, allowing your skimmer to produce skimmate the way it was intended :)

To go a bit further on this, once the "slime" coat is produced inside the skimmer, it should cut down on the micro-bubbles that you see. Good luck :)

thanks alot guys, that's what i was hopping to read.

btw NeighborTom that has to be the funniest avatar photo that i have ever seen. lol

rodcpierce i was thinking actually of adding another divider like you posted, but i was also wanting to keep my return pump area as large as possible to reduce frequency of my water top offs. at the same time though i don't want micro bubbles in my DT. so i haven't really made up my mind yet.
