I was getting a ton of bubbles from the return. After several days, it didn't dissipate at all.

So this is what I did (the heater is not touching it)

    Watcha think?

One thing I noticed after I did this, is that after a day, the water level in the return chamber raised. It is now about an inch higher than the return outlet whereas before it was right at the edge of it (probably where the bubbles were coming from).

Looks good man! Did it take care of the bubbles?

    Completely!

The rise in water level kind of freaked me out - kept a close eye on it, but it never got any higher after that. It did make me verify I've got drip loops in my cords though

This being my first skimmer... it's probably a lack of experience driving this question...

You know how when you first get a skimmer you monitor the collection cup religiously? Well, I have been.

It will remain with barely any in it, then all of a sudden I walk by and it's over half full. I know it was maybe a 1/4 INCH full when I left today around lunch and now (about 5 hours later) it's over halfway full!

    I don't think that's normal - like a sudden surge in skimmate.

Is this an issue of cup height perhaps? I have it sitting fairly high (not as high as it can go though).

Can you post a pic of the cup with the skimmate still in it? If it's "wet skimming" the skimmate will be light in color and it will fill the cup up real fast. And yes, you fix that by raising the cup height. It doesnt take much, maybe 1/8" at a time till you get it dialed in

YES! It is noticeably lighter when this happens. I will raise the cup and try that. Thanks Pack!

I've heard 'wet skimming' before... now I know what it means...

Do you know why it happens? I mean, it doesn't happen instantly and constantly but just every so often?

    EDIT:

How often (just an idea) does the cup fill to need emptying? I've emptied it 3 or 4 times now over the past week and a half.
