This isn't a very quiet skimmer to begin with. But it got alarmingly loud yesterday. I recognized the sound as the impeller thingy being out of alignment.

But this usually happens when you reassemble it incorrectly and starts when you first plug it back in. At this point, it had been running non-stop for a month or two.

Anyway, I took it apart and discovered the reason the impeller thingy got out of alignment.

Here's what it should look like

Here's the other side. The pump itself is fine. I have replaced this pump before and I had the foresight to keep this piece off the old pump. So I have a backup (or had I should say). It's running fine downstairs now. No idea how this happened. Seems impossible to me to be truthful.

With that melted side there, once I got it off, I couldn't get it back on either. There are no signs on the pump itself - like, I couldn't tell you which side of the pump the 'event' happened on.

how frustrating, but cool you kept the old one and had a spare

slowly leaking electrical current can heat up plastics to a point they become soft and then distorted
its does not have to be from exposure to a lot of heat
it can happen due to continual exposure to a small amount of heat
