Well, our old Berlin skimmer we bought used finally kicked the bucket. I've looked at the basic problem areas such as the Venturi valve and such, and it all looked clean. So there's probably some internal clog somewhere. We decided to not really mess with getting the old skimmer working again, so we're actually going to buy a new skimmer to put in the tank. And we kinda gotta grab one fast, the algae is already starting to come back a little tiny bit after the few days that Berlin was offline.

The tank is a 46 bowfront with about 55-56 total gallons in it. 2 o. clownfish, 1 six line, 1 coral beauty, 1 Molly Miller Blenny, 1 yellow watchman goby with tiger pistol. 5 types of zoa, starburst coral, feather duster, xenia, orange shroom, and frogspawn. And a CUC.

We have a small sump to work with as far as skimmer footprint goes. The Berlin was almost too big. So we've taken size into consideration.

We've narrowed our choices down to:

1)AquaC Remora HOB skimmer - We'd have to hang it on the back of our display tank, but that might allow me to squeeze a DIY fuge into the sump? It's rated for 75 gallons.

2)Reef Octopus NW 110 skimmer - Needle wheel. Perfect size for our sump (it has a 7"x9" footprint including pump, and we cut out a 7x9 sheet of paper. fit perfectly). Rated for 90 gallons.

So far, I think I like the Octopus better. Which one would you say to go with? We're trying to stay under $200 too cause my mom isn't too savy with spending a butt load on a skimmer. ;)

I would go with the octopus. I just don't trust HOB skimmers for some reason. I know people have had success with them, but for some reason I can't trust them.

I would go octopus as well. Even if you wanted a HOB for fuge room, you could throw an Octopus BH-100F in the list as well. I love mine ;)

Whoopsies. Sorry Matt. I got a little overzealous with the post :D I'll contain myself and put it in it's right place next time :)

We're probably going to order the skimmer tomorrow. So I'll see who else replies until then. So far it's looking octopus. And we weren't too terribly turned on by having a HOB skimmer...fuge room or no fuge room.

I do not know about the aqua C, but another advantage of the HOB octopus (the BH-100F), is that it can be modified to run in the stand as a stand alone unit (neither hanging on the bak nor IN the sump. Sits along side of sump and is plumbed in). Might give you the best of both worlds for your situation ;)

I went through the same decision on my 55 gallon. I ended up going with the Octopus NW 120 (not sure what the difference is) and it is working great. I have no problem controlling the density of the skimmate to either run wet or dry. One thing is that it is sensitive to the depth of the water it is sitting in so I have to keep up with evaporation.

here r a few pics from today this is with about a week of skimming. imo i dont think it could skim my 55 gal with even a med bio load. i have not used the octo hobs yet but after reading all i can about their line of skimmers i would try one. also on the remora after the bubbles break at the top of the water level there is only about 1 inch of foam head. the octo hob pics i get online looks like its making tons of foam !

We went ahead and ordered the Octopus NW 110. We had to order the 110 because of space issues. It has the perfect footprint for what we need, so I'll let you guys know how it goes!
