I don't know what happened here. Did you not realize the octopus would eat everything in the tank?

He did not realize that he was putting an octopus in the tank... it was a hitchhiker. A really cool hitchhiker but with some rather unfortunate consequences.

Ok.. well. I know all the LFS around here would gladly take him. Or maybe buy a tank divider until you can give him away.

Probably true but the poster said that wasn't an option ;) Tank dividers are a tough call with octopi. Your talking a strong smart animal that can fit through any hole it's beak can. No tank divider I know of is even remotely strong enough to contain an octopus.

There's another thread with the story. This was a follow up thread :)

FWIW the octopus would have beat any in tank barrier to get at fish/shrimp, etc in short order. The smell alone would drive them wild. I used to bring them in both wholesale and retail and IME they are truly amazing escape artists. The best thing would be a plastic peanut butter jar (large one) with a ton of small holes melted in it. I've seen them push open the normal critter carriers most people use. Once you loose a ton of livestock to them you start respecting their true strength and intelligence.

I'm fully aware of their intelligence. That doesn't mean it's impossible to contain one. Without knowing the whole story I think some sort of effort should be made to isolate it/capture it then try to find it a home. Since there is no story here I can only make assumptions.

The poster would have but he couldn't, can't you just leave it at that instead of the broken record mantra of "there's no story to go on"?

My reply above was in direct response to your "use a tank divider". I explained why that is not possible with octopi. I did say there are methods to contain them, did I not? So why even post
???? Seems like rather then discuss it you want to debate it :(
